WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Texas Southern Women's Golf Team has a one-shot lead and is in first place after their opening round of 310 at the PGA Works Collegiate Championship on Monday.The morning field had an eventful day, thanks to delayed play shortly after everyone had teed off due to severe rain. After roughly four holes, heavy rains came down, causing standing water, which resulted in suspended play for over an hour. Play was resumed, and the morning field completed play. Junior, Thaiz Amezcua, leads the way for the Tigers and is in second place individually following her three-over-par first round of 74. Amezcua's first round included three birdies, 9 pars, and six bogeys, and she is one shot off the lead.
Freshman Carmen Pate was three strokes back after shooting a 77 and is tied for sixth, while Zufan Girard posted a 7-over-par 78 and is tied for10th. Junior, Shawnise Gregory and graduating senior Azul Amezcua, are tied for 17th after both recording scores of 81.
The PGA Works Collegiate Championship is hosted by The Park. The Women's Team Division has six competing teams, including Alabama State University, Chicago State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, and Texas Southern.
The tournament format includes 54 holes over three days, with the second round beginning on Tuesday at 12 p.m. The Golf Channel's Live Broadcast will be Monday, May 4 - Wednesday, May 6 (4:00 pm - 7:00 pm ET).
