BEAUMONT, Texas – In a preview of conference action, Texas Southern defeated Southern in four sets for its first win of the season during the Lamar University-hosted Cardinal Classic.

The Lady Tigers had three players that notched double-digit kill total, with Alexis Austin pacing all TSU players with 11.

Kirby Anderson and Eboni Mitchell each put away 10 kills, and Anderson figured in on five blocks.

Breyanna York had a stat-stuffing effort with 34 assists, 11 digs, four kills and three block assists.

Southern's Jada Carter led the Jaguars with 11 kills, 12 digs and three blocks while hitting .471. Shelby Jolly added 10 kills, and Arabella Hall posted nine. Vaterra Calais was a dig shy of her second double-double in as many matches, also serving up 39 assists.

With the match tied 1-1, TSU threatened to run away with the third frame thanks to a 6-0 start, but Southern regrouped to take a 20-19 lead before consecutive attack errors by Jolly aided Texas Southern down the stretch.

Southern built a 13-9 lead in set four, but TSU went on a 13-3 run to take control, a scoring spurt that the Jaguars were unable to bounce back from.
