EL PASO, Texas – UTEP scored a pair of goals in each half as TSU fell 4-0 in a road soccer match on Sunday evening.
Texas Southern applied early pressure on UTEP two minutes into the match as the Tigers quickly pushed their offense up the field, which culminated with an Azucena Martinez shot that led to a corner kick. TSU had another opportunity at a goal as Bailey Bucker found Kaia Butler for a shot attempt, which sailed over the goal in the 42nd minute.
UTEP would attempt four shots over the next several minutes until play came to a halt due to a timeout. When play resumed, the Miners stole possession and used a nifty crossover to set up a shot attempt, which was initially saved by goalie Alessandra Bastidas. However, the ball deflected back to UTEP as Ana Quintero knocked it in for the 1-0 lead.
Bastidas was busy over the next few minutes, but she was up to the task with three consecutive saves. TSU would have two more shot attempts to close out the half as Savannah Muldrew and Melissa Knutson had attempts in the 26th and 34th minutes, respectively. With 1:49 left in the half, UTEP had a shot attempt as Bastidas made a leaping attempt to deflect the shot, but on the deflection, the ball somehow found the top right-hand corner of the goal and bounced in for a 2-0 halftime lead.
Due to lightning in the area, the second half was delayed as play resumed with a nighttime sky. Five minutes into the half, Muldrew intercepted a pass and went coast-to-coast before being fouled to set up a free kick. Clare Dotigny's free kick was just above the goal as TSU couldn't generate another shot attempt despite a pair of corner kicks over the next minute.
The Miners added their third goal of the night with 28:47 left on the clock as Quintero turned and knocked it in the back of the goal. Five minutes later, UTEP scored its final goal of the night as the shot deflected off the bottom left pole for a 4-0 lead.
Butler and Dotigny both had two shots each while Bastidas recorded five saves.
TSU is back in action on Thursday at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a 7 p.m. start.
