BATON ROUGE, La. — Texas Southern volleyball picked up its second SWAC road win of the season Monday night, defeating Southern University 3–1 (25-16, 25-17, 17-25, 25-13) at Seymour Gymnasium.
The Tigers came out strong, controlling the first two sets with a balanced offensive attack and disciplined defense. Southern responded in the third, but TSU regrouped in the fourth, jumping out to an early lead and never trailing. Aggressive serving and net play helped the Tigers shut down Southern's offense and seal the match.
Gracie Hill led Texas Southern with 19 kills, hitting .500 while adding four digs and three blocks. Lauren Battle followed with nine kills, six digs and three blocks, while Kourtni Collier added six kills, three blocks and a service ace.
Kennedi Walker and Ava Houston combined for seven block assists and nine digs. Libero Morelia Lorenzo Diaz anchored the back row with 10 digs and two service aces, posting a .941 reception percentage.
Setter Ava Ray and Walker each dished out 15 assists, while Ray also added eight digs and a service ace.
Texas Southern hit .171 as a team and converted 71 percent of its sideouts in the final set. The Tigers out-blocked Southern 8.5 to 6.0 and held the Jaguars to a .092 hitting percentage, forcing 22 attack errors.
The Lady Tigers return home Sunday, Oct. 5, to host Mississippi Valley State in their first home conference matchup. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the H&PE Arena.
