TSU softball had a pair of shutouts to close out its home series against Grambling State on Saturday at Memorial Park.

TSU 2, GRAMBLING STATE 0
Ja’lynn Swiney and Karisma Garcia recorded a pair of fifth-inning RBI as freshman Maren Berger pitched a complete game shutout for a 2-0 win in the opener.

Jordan McClain led the fifth inning off with a bunt single and stole a pair of bases to set up Swiney’s RBI single to left. Paris Johnson recorded a bunt single on the ensuing at-bat which set up Garcia’s sac groundout to score Swiney for a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Grambling State attempted to make things interesting with a leadoff walk followed by a sac. The tying run was put on base after a hit-by-pitch but Berger held ground with a strikeout and fielder’s choice to end the contest.

Johnson went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double as Berger pitched a three-hit shutout.

TSU 4, GRAMBLING STATE 0
Madalynn Gonzales threw a two-hit shutout while Paris Johnson went 3-for-3 as TSU completed the series sweep following a 4-0 win over Grambling State.

With two outs in the second, TSU took advantage of an unexpected gift for a 1-0 lead after Grambling State’s center fielder dropped a pop fly as Saniah Henderson scored from second. The lead moved to 2-0 as Johnson led the third off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch en route to scoring on Deana Zuniga’s sac fly.

Pam Richardson reached base on a GSU error to open the fourth, stole second and scored on Ja’lynn Swiney’s sac fly. Johnson drove in the final run after her RBI single to left scored Jordan McClain.

Johnson finished 3-for-3 with a run scored and RBI. Gonzales was hot from the mound as she struck out seven while allowing only two hits.

TSU is back in action on Tuesday at 1 p.m. as they’ll travel to San Antonio, Texas for a contest against Incarnate Word.
