BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Texas Southern University men’s track & field team dominated the 2024 indoor championship from start to finish en route to claiming its 11th SWAC indoor title in school history.
The Tigers set the tone on day one as they dominated the field events.
Tyree Newman claimed a pair of titles in the heptathlon as he set personal bests while winning the long jump (21-11.75) and pole vault (14-1.25). Newman finished fourth overall with 4,675 points followed by Donovan Brooks’ fifth-place finish of 4,361 points. Donyae Castaneda placed fourth in the long jump (23-6.75) followed by a clean sweep in the pole vault as Adam Hines (13-3.5), Ian Charles (12-11.5) and Newman (12-11.5) finished 1-2 as Charles and Newman finished tied for second. Donovan Brooks also earned a top-10 finish as he jumped 10-11.75 to place ninth.
Blaine Nunn (48-8) and Jalen Walker (47-9) finished 1-2 in the shot put as both set personal bests. Kellen Garion also picked up points with an eighth-place throw of 44-8.25 feet. Turey Stoudmire finished third in the high jump with a height of 6-9
Jose Gonzalez began to cement his legacy in the SWAC on Saturday with a first-place finish in the 3,000 (8:26.38) and helped the distance medley team of David Livingston, Michael Strange, Jr. and Brandon Washington win first place in a time of 10:27.87.
On Sunday, Walker finished second in the weight throw with a personal best mark of 57-2 while Nunn placed eighth after a personal best throw of 46-9. Chadrick Williams finished second after a tight event in the triple jump as he jumped an indoor-best 50-4.5 followed by a 9-10 finish from Elijah Jordan (47-6.5) and Ahmad Muhammad (47-0.25).
Chaunkiveon Lewis ran a personal-best 8.32 to place fourth in the 60-meter hurdles followed by Donyea Jarmon’s (8.55) sixth-place run. Chaunzavia Lewis ran a season-best 6.87 to place fifth in the 60-meter dash finals while Gonzalez won the mile run in a time of 4:18.06. Brandon Washington placed third in the 400 after a run of 1:54.43.
Gonzalez capped off his Sunday with his fourth gold medal as he won the 5,000 in a time of 15:09.29 while Livingston placed eighth (15:55.75).
Gonzalez was named the SWAC’s Most Outstanding Track Performer while head coach Clyde Duncan was named Men’s Coach of the Year.
