History

Texas Southern fought back from an early double-digit deficit but fell short in the final seconds as Grambling State claimed a 66-63 win Saturday evening inside the H&PE Arena.

TSU had a decent showing to open the first half but the bottom fell out as GSU shortly thereafter went on a 23-7 run over the next seven minutes to lead 31-11. TSU would regroup as the half came to an end with a 14-3 run sparked by Chris Craig’s aggressiveness on both ends of the ball along with several baskets by PJ Henry as they were within 10 at 38-28.

The momentum would extend into the second half as TSU came out firing on all cylinders sparked by an early 8-2 run which saw them get within 40-36 on Deon Stroud’s layup. Grambling State would move back up by seven but TSU kept its foot on the pedal as they outscored GSU 11-5 over the next five minutes to claim a 47-45 lead after Kenny Hunter’s basket with 11:02 remaining. From that point, it was a back-and-forth affair as it was an evenly played game with TSU outscoring GSU 16-14 over the next seven minutes.

Tied at 61-all with 4:32 left, GSU’s Antwan Burnett nailed a three-pointer for a 64-61 lead as GSU outscored TSU 5-0 over the next three minutes. TSU would miss its next four shots during that span until a Deon Stroud dunk with 1:08 remaining as GSU led 66-63. With 33 seconds remaining, GSU missed a point blank jumper and TSU appeared to regain possession of the ball with 31.8 seconds left.

However, a replay review gave the ball back to GSU and they had another opportunity to put the game away but missed a jumper. TSU regained control of the ball with seven seconds left but Jonathan’s Cisse’s game-tying three-pointer fell short as time expired.

Stroud led TSU with 14 points while Henry scored 12. Kenny Hunte scored 10 points with a team-high eight rebounds.

TSU is back in action at 7:30 p.m. on Monday against Southern.
