HOUSTON- The Texas Southern Lady Tigers followed up on a tough non-conference schedule with a historic conference opening win over the Howard Bison on a perfect sun splashed day at Alexander Durley Field.

The win was the first for the Lady Tigers over Howard since the Bison joined the conference in 2014.

"We can't rate it above anything just because this is the first conference game," said TSU coach Kathryn Balgun. "We've got a ton of hard competition coming and there is no doubt we will see them again in the tournament, so it is something to build on and something to say that we're a good team and continue the momentum."

Dynamic ball movement and defense would rule the early part of the contest until the 24th minute of the 1st period when TSU's Forward Desiree Hart outmaneuvered a Howard defender for possession of the ball and rocketed a shot to the back of the net.

The Lady Tigers would quickly strike again as TSU Midfielder Begonia Rodriguez-Bravo would follow that score in the 22nd minute blasting a shot past Howard goalie Aaliyah Hightower.

Howard would draw closer when Makela Davidson booted in a ricochet at point blank range making the score 2-1, but the Bison could not complete the comeback.

Howard would get two other good scoring opportunities, but both Victoria Thornton and Thalia Boucher's shots would sail high clipping the crossbar. Bourcher's shot on goal, the Bison's 11th would come with seconds remaining.

Paula Vizoso, a freshman goalkeeper from Madrid, Spain was particularly tough in goal.

"Paula has done a really good job, she's got some of that size that helps with some of those longer throws or crosses in that she is able to come out and tower above everybody," added Balogun.

The Lady Tigers with the victory move to 1-0 in league play as they return to the pitch on Friday, September 28th when they host Jackson State.
