TSUSports.com: Grambling State picks up 78-55 win over Texas Southern

HOUSTON- The Texas Southern Tigers Basketball team dropped a 78-55 decision to the Grambling State Tigers on Monday at the HPE Arena.
Grambling State entered the game in 1st place in the SWAC standings and they played like it with hot shooting from the floor in the first half going 17-of-31 good for 54 percent.

Texas Southern struggled shooting from the field throughout the game as the Tigers were 7-of-25 in the first half (28 percent) and 21-of-55 for the game (38 percent).

GSU took a 41-19 advantage into the break fueled in large part behind the play of guard Ivy Smith Jr. as he tallied a game high 22 points.

"We have to understand that every team we face in this league is going to give us their best game," said TSU head coach Mike Davis. "We came out tonight a played with a lack of energy and focus and when that happens you open yourself up for games like this."

Texas Southern was led in scoring by Donte Clark who tallied 19 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and a block. Trae Jefferson contributed 16 points while Marquis Salmon scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor.

The Tigers were out rebounded 46-24 while also giving up 18 second chance points. Grambling State took it largest lead of the contest at the 1:32 mark of the first half at 25 points.

Texas Southern will travel to face Mississippi Valley State on Saturday, February 17 at 4:00 pm.
