TSU Golf finishes 2nd in Alabama State Fall Golf Classic

PRATTVILLE, Ala. – The Alabama State men's and women's golf teams won their respective divisions on the conclusion of the ASU Fall Golf Classic on the Senator Course at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

In men's Division I play, Alabama State posted a team score of 2-under par 286 on Monday to finish with a team score of 578. Branson Ferrier posted a 3-under 69 in the final round to finish at 1-over 145, with five birdies and just two bogeys on his card Monday. Francis Berthiaume posted 71 for the second straight day to finish the event at 2-under 142. Robert Grant also shot 1-under 71 on Monday to finish the tournament at 1-under 143. Ian Mmbando (73-76  149) and Yann Pfierrer (77-75 152) completed the scoring.

"Our guys responded well, as I felt they would," head coach Dr. Gary Grandison said after the 'A' group posted a 292 and left shots on the course. "We executed more shots today, and played team golf which was good to see."

Tennessee State finished in second place with a team score of 605 after improving five shots from Sunday's round. Andrew Warnick shot even-par 72 to lead the Tigers with a two-day total of 3-over 14. James Stepp again shot  two-over 74 to finish at four-over par 148.

The Alabama State 'B' team finished third, shooting 309 for the second straight day to finish at 618. Corey Price followed up his career-low one-under 71 performance with a four-over 76 to finish at three-over 147. Daniel Park shot even-par 72 on Monday to post a five-over total of 149. Joseph Killebrew (79-79  158) and Jose Rodriguez (82-82  164) completed the scoring for the Hornets.

Arkansas Pine Bluff finished fourth with a team score of 666 (338-328).

In men's A Division play, Faulkner's 'A' team won with a team score of 586. Daniel Jansen posted the best round of the day with a four-under 68 to lead the Eagles with a one-under par 143. Brandon Godwin shot one-over 73 to finish three-over par 147, one stroke ahead of Hunter Fikes (74-74  148).

Freed-Hardeman posted a final round team score of 308 to finish second with an overall score of 621. Chad Lewis' two-over 74 in the final round led to a score of seven-over 151, as the Lions finished four shots ahead of the Faulkner 'B' team's score of 625.

After Sunday's three-under 69, Hrafn Gudlaugsson was the low medalist in his flight, shooting a final-round one-over 73 to finish at two-under par 142.

Baptist College of Florida (339-347)) finished in fourth place with a total of 686.

In women's Division I play, Alabama State posted a final round team score of 334 to finish with at 659. Brooklyn Kraakman shot a final-round eight-over 80 to lead the Lady Hornets with a score of 156. Janelle Kraakman (86-82) and Mia Campbell (82-86) each posted a score of 168, Darlene Raymond shot 170 and Shannon Spinuzzi 176 for ASU.

"The ladies didn't play well and are not happy with the performance," Grandison said. "There's a lot of growth we still can make, and I like their attitudes in regards to that. It's the first tournament of the season, and if we can get back to the drawing board and make adjustments, we can improve our play next week."

Texas Southern finished second with a two-day total of 670. Low medalist Kassandra Rivera posted the best round  in women's play Monday with a one-under par 71 to finish at three-over 147. Savannah State finished third with a team score of 769, led by Michelle Gifford's tournament total of 166.

In A Division play, McLennan Community College won its division with a team score of 631. Aries Ramirez was the low medalist in her group, finishing the event at seven-over par 151 (77-74). Freed-Hardeman improved more than 30 shots from its Sunday score to finish second with a team score of 721 (376-345). Faulkner finished third with a team score of 733 (367-366).

The Alabama State women's team returns to action next week in the FedEx Memphis Intercollegiate Tournament. The men's team returns to action at September 28 and 29 in the National Black College Hall of Fame Tournament.
