Three Texas Southern Tigers were among the honorees when the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) released the names of the 2014 Baseball All-SWAC teams.
Designated-hitter Jerry Ford, II, Outfield Zach Welz and relief pitcher Felix Gomez received the post season honor. All-three were named to the All-SWAC second team.
Ford led the Tigers with 55 hits, 21 stolen bases and a .322 batting average. The junior from Houston also had 5 doubles, 1 triple and 15 RBIs.
Welz led the team with 8 doubles and 33 RBIs and was second with a .304 batting average. He also had 48 hits, 23 runs and 10 stolen bases.
Gomez pitched 53.2 innings with 42 strikeouts in 20 appearances. He ended the regular season with a 4.02 ERA and a 1-4 record. The junior from Houston pitched 18 consecutive innings without giving up a run.
Alabama State led all selections with seven overall All-SWAC honorees including six on the first team. Alabama A&M posted four picks. Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Jackson State, Southern and Prairie View A&M finished with two overall. Alcorn State had one player make the all conference teams among the 24 players selected.

Pitcher of the Year: Joseph Camacho-Alabama State
Hitter of the Year: Andrew Utterback-Alabama A&M
Newcomer of the Year: Tilur Smith-Jackson State
Freshman of the Year: Cody Den Beste-Prairie View
Coach of the Year: Mervyl Melendez- Alabama States'
The awards and All-SWAC team selections were voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
