EDINBURG, Texas – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University claimed their first win of the 2017 season with an exciting five-set win over Incarnate Word in the first of two matches the team played Saturday.

Texas Southern later fell to host Texas–Rio Grande Valley to give the Lady Tigers a split of their day in Edinburg.

In the early match, the Lady Tigers claimed their first set wins of the season after dropping their previous four matches in straight sets. UIW fought back from a 2-0 match deficit before the Lady Tigers prevailed 16-14 in the fifth set.

Scores of the match were 25-19, 25-23, 26-28, 25-16, and 16-14.

Alexis Austin and Nicole Robinson led the Lady Tigers (1-5) with 16 kills apiece in the win over the Cardinals. The duo tallied a combined hitting percentage of .435 as they committed only five errors on 62 attempts.

Austin was also a leader on the defense, tallying 15 digs and giving her a double-double for the first time this season.

Eboni Mitchell knocked down 10 kills for the Lady Tigers. Asia Howard handed out a season-high 27 assists, while Alyssa Chuidian recorded 21 assists.

Defensively, freshman Valencia Grayson recorded 18 digs, while Cassidy Jannson tallied 15 digs. TSU's setters (Howard and Chuidian) each had nine digs in the match. At the net, Austin was in on five total blocks, as was Kirby Anderson, who also knocked down eight kills.

TSU seized control of set one with six unanswered points to turn a 17-16 deficit into a comfortable 22-17 lead. Anderson and Austin knocked down two kills apiece during that stretch.

In set two, the Lady Tigers fought back from a five-point deficit with a 7-1 run that gave TSU a 17-16 lead, with Anderson tallying a kill and a block to help erase the Cardinal advantage. With TSU ahead 19-17, the teams traded 3-0 rallies, with the Lady Tigers crossing the figurative finish line with a pair of UIW attacking errors and a Robinson kill on set point.

The Lady Tigers were a single point away from the sweep three times in set three, only to see the Cardinals fend off defeat each time. After tying the score at 26, UIW won the set with an ace and a block on consecutive points.

Incarnate Word rode the emotion of their set three comeback to a comfortable nine-point win in set four, and appeared to have all the momentum heading into the decisive set. Trailing 11-8, the Lady Tigers rallied for four consecutive points, with Robinson knocking down two kills during that stretch. A block by Jannson and Aundrea Boyland cut UIW's lead to one point, and Ellena Torres capped the rally with a service ace that gave TSU the lead.

UIW fended off match point only once in set five, with the Lady Tigers taking a 15-14 lead on Anderson's eighth kill. TSU ultimately prevailed with the match point on – of all things – a ball-handling error by UIW's setter.

The Lady Tigers were unable to carry their momentum into the second match as the host Vaqueros claimed a three-set sweep with scores of 25-11, 25-7, and 25-13. Anderson led the Lady Tigers with five kills against UTRGV.

The TSU volleyball team kick off a stretch of six consecutive matches in Houston on Tuesday when they visit NAIA opponent St. Thomas for a 6:30 p.m. match at UST's Jerabeck Center.

The Lady Tigers will open conference play Friday when they host the first Southwestern Athletic Conference Roundup of the season at the H&PE Arena. All 10 SWAC teams will be in action in Houston during the three-day event, with the Lady Tigers opening play against Alcorn State on Friday at 10 a.m.
