Lady Tigers win SWAC home opener over Alcorn State 69-44

HOUSTON, Texas - Texas Southern University defeated Alcorn State 69-44 to capture a convincing win in their SWAC home opener on Saturday inside the H&PE Arena.

Morgan Simmons scored a team high 13 points for TSU (4-8, 1-0 SWAC) in the win. Alexus Johnson came off the bench scoring 11 points shooting 50 percent (3-6) from the field, going 5-of-8 from the free throw line.

The Lady Tigers jumped ahead of Alcorn State within the first two minutes of the game and never looked back. TSU led 42-12 at halftime.

Texas Southern will now get set to host the Southern Jaguars on Monday, January 6th at 5:00 pm at the H&PE Arena.

Lady Tigers lose to Southern in overtime 70-68

HOUSTON, Texas - Southern University earned a 70-68 conference win over Texas Southern University on Monday in overtime at the H&PE Arena.

SU's (5-5,2-0) Kendra Coleman scored a game high 24 points in the win. Coleman went 9-of-21 from outside the paint, shooting 3-of-7 from three point range.

SU shot 53 percent from the field in the first set of minutes. With only one second left on the clock before the break, Yasmin Fuller connected a three to give the Lady Jaguars a one point lead (39-38) at halftime.

In the second half, a jumper by Brittany Washington and free throw by Jadea Brundidge gave SU a two point lead with 41 seconds left on the clock. TSU's (4-9,1-1) Morgan Simmons connected on a pair of free throws in the final seconds to tie the game 64-64, leading into overtime.

Southern was able to get several timely buckets during the extra stanza they held on for a two point win.

In the loss Jazzmin Parker and Alexus Johnson were spectacular scoring 20 and 21 points respectively. Sarah Williams dished out a game high 10 assists.

Texas Southern will face Prairie View A&M next on Saturday at 5:30 pm at the H&PE Arena.

Texas Southern outlast Prairie View winning 63-59 at home

HOUSTON- The Texas Southern Lady Tigers played outstanding defense on their way to a 63-59 victory over SWAC rival Prairie View A&M University at the H&PE Arena Saturday night.

The Lady Tigers had a slow start during the first half but key defensive stops kept them in the game and held the game at a 25-25 tie going in to the half.

In the second half, the Lady Tigers turned on the heat and found their rhythm defensively. The Lady Tigers had 12 steals for the night, lead by Jazzmin Parker with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Ashley Ferguson also contributed 13 points and 4 rebounds.

With the win the Lady Tigers are now 2-1 in SWAC conference play and 5- 9 on the season.

The Lady Tigers hit the road to play SWAC opponents Grambling State and Jackson State before returning home Jan.25 to play Mississippi Valley State at 3:00 pm at the H&PE Arena at Texas Southern University.

Texas Southern closes out MVSU in the second half to capture 65-55 win

HOUSTON, Texas - Jazzmin Parker scored 24 points and tallied eight rebounds to help lift Texas Southern over Mississippi Valley State 65-55 Saturday night at H&PE Arena.

Morgan Simmons registered in her fourth double-double on the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Brianna Sidney tacked on 11 points of her own. Rounding out the scoring charge, Ashley Ferguson provided the Lady Tigers with an offensive spark, scoring 10 points off the bench for TSU (8-9,5-1).

The Lady Tigers were able to use a 15-10 points in the paint advantage in the first half to give them a 39-25 lead at the break.

After trailing by as many as 21 points in the second half, MVSU used a 17-6 run to pull within three points of the Lady Tigers with five minutes remaining, but it was not enough. TSU used a series of free throws in the last three minutes of the game to take home the win.

"I'm extremely happy with the way our team battled through adversity in the second half," said TSU head coach Johnetta Hayes-Perry. "When Mississippi Valley made their run in the second half we were able to maintain our composure and close the game out on a strong note. Mississippi Valley is a well coached team and they play hard for 40 minutes. This was another big win for our program early in conference play."

Texas Southern will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday closing out a two-game home stand. Tip-off for Monday's game has been slated for 5:00 pm.

Lady Tigers win fifth straight game with victory over UAPB

HOUSTON, Texas - Three players finished in double figures to lead Texas Southern University to a 75-51 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday night at H&PE Arena. The Lady Tigers held a 20 point advantage with just over two minutes remaining and closed out the game with a 7-0 run.

Jazzmin Parker scored 19 points, Brianna Sidney had 12 and Alexus Johnson scored 10 off the bench. TSU (9-9, 6-1 SWAC) shot 30-of-59 from the field, going 11-of-14 from the line, picking up its fifth consecutive win.

The Lady Tigers jumped out to an early lead. After a jumper by Parker, TSU led 26-21 with five minutes left in the first half. Parker's shot sparked a 19-2 run that help the Lady Tigers secure a 39-23 halftime lead.

"We played with a lot of energy tonight," said TSU head coach Johnetta Hayes-Perry. We maintained intensity throughout the game and we stayed focused. Overall I thought we did a great job of sticking to our game plan."

Texas Southern will now get set to travel to Alabama as they get set to embark on a three-game road swing starting this Saturday.

I think she has one of the smoothest shots in the game right now and wouldn't be surprised if she was drafted high. She's still got another year to play and should get stellar numbers next year as well.

TSU gets a hard fought win over Alabama A&M on the road

NORMAL, Ala.- Texas Southern captured a hard fought road win on Saturday defeating the Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs 66-61.

Brianna Sydney led all Lady Tigers scorers with 16 points on a 6-of-14 shooting night from the field. Sydney also tallied three steals and three assists. Jazzmin Parker scored 15 points and point guard Sarah Williams notched 10 points as TSU led the entire second half of play.

Texas Southern held a 13 point advantage at 44-31 at the 14:21 mark of the second period. The Lady Tigers would allow AAMU to get no closer than two points at 56-54 late in the contest.

The Lady Tigers will now get set to travel to face Alabama State on Monday at 5:30 pm in Montgomery.

Lady Tigers win ninth straight game with 74-70 victory over rival PVAMU

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas- The Texas Southern Lady Tigers basketball team traveled to face cross-town rival Prairie View A&M on Saturday.

TSU jumped out to an early 8-2 advantage off of a three point basket by Brianna Sidney and points by Sarah Williams. The Lady Panthers closed the game the lead to 10-9 at the 14:27 mark of the first half.

The game would eventually come to a 13 all tie at the 12:51 mark of the first stanza. Brianna Sidney had the hot hand for the Lady Tigers early in the first half of action as she logged 19 points pacing Texas Southern's offensive attack.

Jazzmin Parker contributed five points in the first half while point guard Sarah Williams tallied six points in the games' opening period. PVAMU was able to keep the game close in the first half with the assistance of 15 points off Lady Tiger miscues.

Texas Southern got eight points from its bench in the first half while holding the Lady Panthers bench to just two points. PVAMU won the second chance points battle in the first half tallying five while holding TSU to zero.

The second half of play begun much like the first half ended with both teams trading baskets in what was shaping up to be a back and forth affair. Texas Southern went up 45-38 after a drive and lay in by Jazzmin Parker. The Lady Tigers would go up by nine at 47-38 after Williams was able to break down the defense before dishing to Alexus Johnson for a wide open layup.

Sidney stretched the lead to double digits after getting a steal and coasting all the way down the court for an uncontested fast break bucket.

Prairie View wouldn't go away as the Lady Panthers cut the Lady Tigers lead to one point at 61-60 after several buckets by LaReahn Washington inside the paint.

Ashley Ferguson connected on two free throws at the 2:52 mark of the second half to give Texas Southern a 65-62 lead. Sidney would subsequently push the lead to six after converting a three point basket in the corner. Sidney hit another three pointer from the same spot on the floor on TSU's ensuing possession to take Texas Southern's lead to nine points.

Prairie View countered with several points of its own and with 34 seconds remaining in regulation Texas Southern held a 71-68 advantage. With time expiring the Lady Panthers benefitted from a Texas Southern turnover and brought the score to 71-70 after obtaining an offensive rebound and getting a layup inside the paint.

PVAMU was forced to foul on the Lady Tigers next possession and TSU's Parker went to the free throw line with a chance to push the Lady Tigers lead to three points. Parker hit both free throws effectively giving TSU a 73-70 lead. Prairie View missed a three point basket but got the rebound and Texas Southern was called for a foul. PVAMU missed both attempts from the charity and Parkers was fouled once again. She made one of two free throws as TSU sealed the win capturing a 74-70 victory over Prairie View A&M.

With the win TSU captured their ninth consecutive win which is currently the longest in such streak in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. TSU will next face Grambling State at home on Saturday, February 15 at 5:30 pm.
