Creighton senior Doug McDermott finds himself just 34 points from joining Division I’s 3,000-point club, a space occupied by only seven other players. That he’s on the threshold of college basketball history is something he couldn’t foresee before the season began, given the Bluejays were making a step up in class from the Missouri Valley to the Big East.
The seven-man group McDermott will soon join includes LSU’s Pete Maravich, Portland State’s Freeman Williams, La Salle’s Lionel Simmons, Mississippi Valley State’s Alphonso Ford, Texas Southern’s Harry Kelly, Saint Peter’s Keydren Clark and Bradley’s Hersey Hawkins. Among the seven, five are still living, and three were reached by Sporting News to share their memories.
