HAMMOND, LA – The Texas Southern Lady Tigers softball team now sits at 3-1 at the Southeastern Louisiana softball tournament. The Lady Tigers capped off a thrilling day of competition on Saturday as they went undefeated at 2-0 capturing a huge win over Conference USA member the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP) winning 4-1 in seven innings of play.
“Our players are really starting to buy into what we’re teaching them every day in practice and during our games,” said TSU head coach Worley Barker. “This team has a lot of potential to be really good and beating two quality programs like UTEP and LSU-Alexandria is a testament to the hard work they’ve put in over the course of the off-season and during fall drills.”
The Lady Tigers also knocked off LSU-Alexandria in the second contest of the day 5-2. Texas Southern has talented group of players this season with the return of pitcher Rebecca Villarreal and several talented players at each position.
Haley Smith pounded out two RBI’s against LSU-Alexandria in three at bats. Villarreal pitched a complete game allowing just four hits and two earned runs. She faced a total of 30 batters only allowing five to reach base on balls.
“Rebecca has been a leader on our team all season,” said Barker. “She works hard in practice and she sets a strong example for our younger players to follow. She is a big part of the success we’re having and I’m proud to see how well she’s performed early in the season.”
Texas Southern will have one more game at the tournament tomorrow before returning home this upcoming week to face Southeastern Louisiana at home on Wednesday, February 20. Game start time has been slated for 3:00 pm at Memorial Park.
