PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Texas Southern women's track team opened the 2021 campaign this past Saturday at the 2021 Fred Newhouse Invitational on the Prairie View A&M campus.

Due to COVID-19, opportunities to run indoors are very limited and faced with an already short season to begin with, those opportunities are even harder to come by. As a result, the TSU track teams were forced to improvise to get competition time in and ran a simulated indoor meet outdoors at Prairie View A&M.

Ashlonia John won the 400 as she led a trio of TSU runners which finished 1-2-3. John ran a 58.79 followed by Miriam Darden (58.85) and Shelby Brooks (58.99). Zaidra James placed second in the 60-meter hurdles as she ran 9.39 while Kayla Jenkins and Jessilyn Nichols placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Shelby Brooks placed third in the 200 (26.54) while Tajaia Paddio placed fifth in the 60 with a time of 8.26 followed by Cassidy True's third-place finish in the mile run. The mile relay quartet of Brooks, Darden, John and Rashel Bonds finished second in a time of 4:03.93.

In the jumps, T'nia Sample won the triple jump with a mark of 38-1.25 while Calise Hardy was TSU's top finisher (4th) in the long jump with a length of 16-0.25.

TSU dominated the throwing events as Phylan Perkins (49-6.5) and Taylor Watson (46-10.25) placed 1-2 in the weight throw and shot put (Perkins/35-10.5 / Watson 32-7.5).

The team is back in action this Friday and Saturday at Prairie View A&M for the Prairie View Invite with Multi.
