HOUSTON – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University overcame a poor shooting performance Monday to claim a 58-52 win over Arkansas–Pine Bluff.
At TSU's H&PE Arena, Joyce Kennerson and Kaitlyn Palmer scored 18 points apiece for the Lady Tigers (10-8), who improved to 5-2 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
Kennerson grabbed six rebounds and four assists against the visiting Lady Lions; her four helpers moved her into 10th place on TSU's all-time assists leaderboard. The junior from Port Arthur, Texas, now has 212 career assists, as she moved ahead of Carlette Moore, recorded 210 assists during her four-year TSU career that concluded in 1982.
Destiny Brewton and Faith Ohanta scored 11 points each for the Lady Lions (3-14, 1-6 SWAC).
The win was the fourth consecutive victory and fifth in the last six games for the Lady Tigers. TSU also avenged the team's two losses to Pine Bluff last season.
The Lady Tigers shot only 30.8 percent (16 of 52) from the floor Monday, winning for only the second time in eight games this season in which they had a lower shooting percentage than their opponents. TSU never made more than one-third of their shots in any period.
Kennerson's NCAA-leading 25.6 points per game dipped to 25.2 points per game, four-tenths ahead of Ohio State's Kelsey Mitchell; the Buckeyes return to action Tuesday.
Palmer – the second-leading 3-point shooter in the SWAC – was held to 2-of-9 shooting from 3-point range, but had one of the team's better nights shooting as she made eight out of her 17 overall attempts. TSU's second-leading scorer at 13.5 points per game, Palmer scored in double-figures at home for only the second time this season.
In the seven home games she has played this season, Palmer has averaged 9.6 points per contest; away from the H&PE Arena, she has averaged 16.7 points per game.
Taylor Robinson chipped in seven points, five rebounds and three blocked shots for TSU. She made her only field-goal attempt in the game, and has now made her last 12 shots from the field going back to the second half of TSU's Jan. 13 game at Jackson State.
Nycolle Smith (pictured) scored three points and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds for the Lady Tigers. Catherine Okwilagwe scored four points while going 2-for-2 from the floor.
The Lady Tigers return to action Saturday when they visit Alabama A&M. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
