TSUSports.com: Tiger Track Teams Head To SWAC Indoor Championships

The Texas Southern men's and women's track teams will participate in the 2020 SWAC Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. at the Birmingham Crossplex. This year's meet starts on Thursday, Feb. 20 and concludes Friday, Feb. 21.

On the men's side, a total of 26 student-athletes and two relay teams are ranked in the SWAC's top 10 entering the championships. Ironically, the youth will be called to lead them 10 of the 26 are true freshmen. The Tigers will look to make a major dent in the distance events as eight individuals are ranked in the top 10 as freshman Jose Gonzalez is the top performer in both the mile and 3,000. Filmon Beyene ranks second in the 5,000 while Efrain Lira holds the number three and four spots in the mile and 3,000-meter runs, respectively. In the relays, TSU has the second-fastest distance medley relay in the SWAC with a time of 10:35.83.

The Tigers have six athletes ranked amongst the top 10 in the field events as freshman Chadrick Williams is ranked third (46-4) in the triple jump, fifth (6-2.75) in the high jump and eighth (22-2.25) in the long jump. Freshman Christian Lewis is the SWAC's No. 2 triple jumper (48-0) while freshman Antoine Greer is No. 3 (22-11.25) in the triple jump and eighth (22-2.25) in the long jump.

Twelve student-athletes are represented in the SWAC's top 10 on the women's ledger. Senior Nikole Haroon will be counted on to lead the Tigers as she's ranked sixth in the 400 and seventh in the 200. The Tigers also have a pair of sprinters ranked in the top 10 as sophomore Tatyana Bryant and freshman Tajaia Paddio both ran 7.76 in the 60. TSU also has a pair of distance runners ranked in the 5,000 in Emily Condon and Cassidy True while Briana Creeks is seventh in the 800.

TSU's earlier performances in the throws this past year will provide momentum as junior Taylor Watson is the SWAC's top thrower in the weight throw (56-5.75). Senior Christelle Nintcheu is third in the shot put (44-9.75) and weight throw (54-2) while Phylan Perkins ranks sixth (50-7.25) in the weight throw.
