Ja’Lynn Swiney hit a grand slam in game one and Saniah Henderson homered in game two as the Texas Southern University softball team split a pair of games with Incarnate Word on Tuesday evening at HEB Field.

Game 1: UIW 7, TSU 6
Incarnate Word opened scoring in the bottom of the first, plating five runs on four hits, while taking advantage of one Tiger error to take a commanding lead.

Texas Southern responded at the top of second; after two outs when Pamela Richardson walked and advanced a base on an Angel Morales single up the middle. Jordan McClain walked to load the bases as Swiney hit a gram slam to left field.

TSU gave up one run at the bottom of the second, on two hits and was able to leave three Cardinals on base. The Tigers scored a run at the top of the third as they trailed, 6-5. Both teams exchanged runs in the fifth inning as UIW was able to take the walk off win.

Kaelani Randle started on the mound for TSU as she was tagged for six runs. Maren Berger (3-4) took the loss for the Tigers in 4.2 innings pitched as she struck out two and walked one. Marisa Perla and Henderson both went 4-for-2. Morales went 1-for-2 and had two RBIs.

Game 2: TSU 5, UIW 4
At the top of the first, Richardson singled to center field and advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Swiney. Richardson reached home as Karisma Garcia singled to center field to give the Tigers a 1-0 start. Texas Southern added two more runs at the top of the second on three hits as Lanay Carr singled to plate Morales and Madison Griggs.

The Cardinals responded at the bottom of the frame with three runs on two hits to tie the game at three runs, then added another run at the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead.

After two quiet innings, Henderson highlighted the sixth inning as she homered to left field to tie the game at four. The Tigers scored two runs on two hits in the inning to even the series.

Madalynn Gonzales (3-1) picked up the win for TSU in 2.2 innings as she struck out one and didn’t give up any runs. Samantha Portillo (3-3) took the loss for Incarnate Word in 1.2 innings pitched.
