AUSTIN – The Texas Southern softball team put forth a solid effort on the diamond dispute dropping the final two contests of the Longhorn Invitational Saturday at the University of Texas.

TEXAS 13, TSU 5
TSU put a scare into No. 3 Texas with an early lead before the Longhorns responded to hand them a 13-5 loss in game one.

Down 2-0 after one, TSU opened the second with a leadoff walk from Mila Rodriguez and the deficit was cut to 2-1 after an RBI triple from Tevanae Tate. Two batters later, Julia Bilbao was hit by a pitch and stole second as Tate tied the game at 2-all on a wild pitch. A'Leccia Bell drew a walk and Haley Castro moved TSU ahead 3-2 with an RBI. A UT error scored TSUs fourth run which led UT to make a pitching change. Daryn Haslam singled up the middle for a 5-2 TSU lead.

UT opened the bottom half with a leadoff homer and tied the game with another 2-run homer. After a scoreless third, the Longhorns tacked on three runs in the fourth to lead 8-5 and added four more in the fifth to up the margin to 12-5 before closing the game out in the sixth with a solo homer.

Castro led TSU with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate with included a run and an RBI. Three pitchers saw action for TSU as Naomi Reyes struck out three.

NEW MEXICO 8, TSU 0

New Mexico scored seven runs over the final three innings as TSU dropped its tourney finale by an 8-0 margin.

With two outs in the first inning, a wild pitch scored New Mexico's first run. The TSU defense would keep the team in the game with scoreless second and third innings but a two-run Lobo fourth created a 3-0 deficit after a two-RBI single with two outs.

TSU's Paige Jackson opened the fourth with a double and was pinch ran by Zariah Robins. Robins would advance to third but the inning would close with a groundout to shortstop. New Mexico added a run in the fifth and two errors in the sixth haunted TSU as both led to runs as the Lobos scored four times to close out the contest.

TSU has its home opener on Tuesday versus Stephen F. Austin at 3 p.m. at Memorial Park in Houston.
