WICHITA, Kansas – The Texas Southern baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Wichita State on Saturday afternoon.

Wichita State (4-2) defeated the Tigers (0-9) 7-2 in the first game and 9-1 in the second.

WICHITA STATE 7, TEXAS SOUTHERN 2

Wichita State scored five runs over the final four innings of play to break a tie game en route to a 7-2 win in the opener.

Texas Southern took the lead in the second after an RBI single by freshman Reuben Bennevendo. The play resulted as such through the cause of a throwing error made by Shockers freshman shortstop Derek Shaver, allowing junior Michael Zamora to reach base.

The Tigers' window for victory was given greater credence through the effort of starter Noe Guerrero III, whose initial three innings nullified the Shockers to only one hit, two walks and zero runs.

In the fourth inning, the Tigers increased their lead to 2-0 thanks to Bennevendo's second RBI single. He was preceded by a Victor Bueno double and a Dean Salazar single, but besides Bueno scampering on home, no further damage was inflicted on the home side, keeping the score at 2-0.

In the bottom half of the fourth, the Shockers tied the game on a 2-run home run by freshman Cade Clemons.

After a silent fifth, Wichita State hit a go-ahead RBI triple to right field by freshman Couper Cornblum, giving his team the lead for the first time at 3-2.

Guerrero exited the game after six on a fine showing, allowing three hits, three runs, four walks and striking five batters out. Relievers Jesse Garcia, A.J. Winger, and Tyler Hansen threw in relief as well.

From then on, Wichita State pulled away from the Tigers late by scoring four runs in the seventh and eighth inning. The seventh saw a sacrifice fly made by leadoff hitter Jack Sigrist and the eighth included the entire lineup bat around the order, resulting in a 2-RBI single and a scoring play from a TSU throwing error.

Bueno hit 2-for-3 from the box with a run, double, and walk adding to his name. Bennevendo also finished with a 2-for-3 performance as he batted in the team's only runs.

WICHITA STATE 9, TEXAS SOUTHERN 1

Wichita State combined for seven runs in the sixth and seventh frames to pull away from TSU in a 9-1 decision.

The second game of the doubleheader began in relative silence as starter Jacob Morin relegated the Shockers' bats to zero runs in the first three innings, allowing just one hit in the process. Likewise, the Tigers followed suit, finishing the first third of the game with an equal amount of hits and runs.

However, in the fourth inning, Wichita State took the lead in which they would eventually not relinquish. This was done on an RBI triple by junior Garrett Kocis and a sacrifice fly to right by Clemons.

The game's progress would then reach an exclamation mark as the home team put up five runs on their favor, done possible by a three-run shot to right by Kocis and a two-RBI single by senior Alex Jackson.

In the seventh, the Shockers scored two more runs on a two-RBI double for a 9-0 score, putting the game at its effective end.

Morin eventually finished his day having allowed six hits, six runs and three walks and punching five out in 5.1 innings.

Texas Southern accounted for only four hits as Justin Cooper, Roderick Coffee, Charles Robinson and Bueno recorded hits.

Besides Morin, Jaiden Beck and Robert Loza played their part on the mound for the Tigers, with Beck allowing three runs and hits after 1.2 innings and Loza with two strikeouts after one frame.

Thanks to Saturday's doubleheader, the Tigers will have an additional day of rest as Sunday's game was moved to Saturday due to expected inclement weather. TSU's next contest will occur in Starkville, Miss. as they face the Mississippi State Bulldogs for a one-off game on Feb. 25 at 4 p.m.
