BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas Southern University senior Lauren Rodriguez was recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference as Pitcher of the Week in the sport of softball following exceptional performances during games played between March 19 and 25.
Rodriguez started both ends of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Jackson State and was the winning pitcher in each game. In the opening game, the senior from Houston, Texas, pitched a complete-game no-hitter as TSU won 9-0 in five innings. Rodriguez struck out seven batters and faced one batter over the minimum; Jackson State's lone baserunner in Saturday's opener came via a fielding error in the first inning.
In the second game, Rodriguez continued to baffle JSU hitters, as she scattered four hits over five innings while striking out four more batters.
For the week (and day), she tossed 10 shutout innings, striking out 11 and walking none. She allowed only one extra-base hit, while opposing batters hit .118 against her.
Rodriguez has not given up an earned run since Feb. 25, a streak of 20 consecutive innings. She has compiled a 6-0 record thus far in 2018, with 1.63 ERA and 28 strikeouts.
