ARLINGTON, Texas – Pitching ruled the day as the TSU softball team split a pair of games on the second day of the Maverick Classic.

TSU 2, KANSAS CITY 0

Tevanae Tate finished 3-for-3 and added an insurance run in the third as TSU opened the day with a 2-0 win over Kansas City.

In the bottom of the first, Crimson Davis reached based on an error and moved into scoring position after a sac bunt. Two batters later, Daryn Haslam drove in Davis with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. The Tigers would load the bases but ended the inning with a groundout.

From there, starter Naomi Reyes took over as she recorded an inning-ending strikeout in the second with the tying run on third. Kansas City had another runner in scoring position with two outs in the third but Reyes forced a pop out to end the inning.

TSU returned to the board in the third as Julia Bilbao walked and moved to second after Haslam's fielder's choice. Tate's double to center scored Bilbao for a 2-0 lead. The Tigers remained in control the rest of the way but faced potential trouble as UMKC had two runners on with no outs in the seventh. Reyes regained her composure and forced a strikeout, fielder's choice and pop out to end the game.

Tate finished 3-for-3 with an RBI while Haslam batted 2-for-3 with an RBI. Reyes struck out four as she went the distance.

KENT STATE 1, TSU 0

Game two was about the pitchers as both teams combined for four hits en route to a 1-0 win by Kent State.

TSU had its chances to score early but combined to strand four runners in the first and second frames. In the fourth, a TSU error allowed Kent State to lead the inning off with a baserunner which turned into an unearned run two batters later after an RBI single. From there, the power went back to the pitchers as both teams went scoreless.

Freshman Jazmine Gendorf went the distance as she pitched a two-hitter with a pair of strikeouts.

TSU closes out the tourney with a 9 a.m. contest versus Stephen F. Austin.
