Texas Southern University softball graduate student-athlete Madilynn Marek has been nominated for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year award.

Established in 1991, the NCAA Woman of the Year award recognizes graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.

A native of Victoria, Texas, Marek was a three-year starter at third base for the Lady Tigers and helped lead them to three consecutive SWAC Western Division titles and a SWAC Championship in 2017. She was named to the 2019 SWAC All-Tournament team and named the 2017 SWAC Freshman of the Year after batting .321 with 34 hits, 22 RBI and nine doubles.

Off the field, Marek's academic resume' was equally as impressive as she graduated from TSU magna cum laude with a Bachelor's of Science in Health Studies. Marek was voted by her peers as Vice President of the Health, Kinesiology & Sports Studies Club and named Miss Health, Kinesiology & Sports Studies for the 2018-19 academic year. She is a four-time member of the SWAC All-Academic Team and qualified for the Dean's List four consecutive years. A member of the National Honor Society since 2017, Marek was named to the President's List three consecutive years.

Marek values community service as she has participated in nearly 20 endeavors and volunteered more than 300 hours of service time at places such as the Houston Food Bank, Houston RBI, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, Christ Kitchen and the Wade Smith Foundation since enrolling at TSU.

Next, conferences will select up to two nominees each from the pool of school nominees. Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.

The selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division from the Top 30 and announce the nine finalists in September. From those nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then will choose the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year.

The Top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named at the annual award ceremony Oct. 20 in Indianapolis.
