TSUSports.com: Lady Tigers outlast Alabama State 51-44

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University claimed their third consecutive win Saturday with a 51-44 victory at Alabama State.

Richelle Velez (pictured) scored a game-high 14 points for the Lady Tigers (13-13), who improved to 9-6 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. TSU pulled into a three-way tie for fourth place with Jackson State and Alabama State in the SWAC standings.

The Lady Tigers split their season series with both Jackson State and Alabama State.

TSU's Niya Mitchell scored nine points and pulled in a game-high 10 rebounds for the Lady Tigers. Marquia Turner came off the TSU bench and chipped in eight points.

Texas Southern jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game, only to see the Lady Hornets tie the game three minutes later. TSU responded with another five points and never relinquished its lead for the remainder of the contest.

The Lady Tigers slowly pulled away from their hosts, leading by as many as 10 points in the third quarter. Alabama State would the lead to four points late in the final period, but got no closer.

Ayana Emmanuel led Alabama State (11-15, 9-6 SWAC) with 12 points off the bench.

Texas Southern held the Lady Hornets to 33 percent shooting (15 of 45) from the floor during the game. The Lady Tigers also forced 25 Alabama State turnovers.

The win was TSU's first away from home since Jan. 28, when the Lady Tigers won 68-50 at Mississippi Valley State.

The Lady Tigers return to action Monday when they visit Alabama A&M. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
