• TSU returns home to host No. 24 Lamar University on Saturday inside Shell Energy Stadium at 6 p.m. It's Faith & Family Night as TSU will offer a special 2-for-1 ticket price.
• Saturday's contest will feature live audio on KTSU 90.9 FM and will be shown live on SWAC TV.
• TSU will play Lamar in Houston for the first time since 1980 as this also marks the second time both teams have met since a five-game series from 1980-85.
• Texas Southern has not defeated a Southland Conference opponent since a 26-20 win over former member Sam Houston State in 1996. This marks its fourth game against a Southland Conference foe since 2019.
• Despite its proximity to several SWAC schools, Lamar is only 10-5 all-time against the SWAC as they've played TSU six times, Alcorn State (1-1), Grambling State (2-0), Mississippi Valley State (2-0) and Prairie View A&M (2-1).
• Lamar was picked fourth in the Southland. For the second straight year, TSU catches Lamar off a win over a nationally ranked team as they knocked off No. 4 South Dakota at home.
• Newcomer Matthew Cooks was the SWAC's Co-Defensive Player of the Week after finishing last week's game at Cal with nine tackles, a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and pass breakup.
• TSU had three players earn preseason All-SWAC Second Team honors in Trent Leary (WR), Damarcus Thompson (DE) and Jeremy Ramirez (P).
• After several years of offseason changes to the coaching staff, the Tigers finally had stability this offseason with no changes.
• TSU was picked to finish fourth in the SWAC during the annual SWAC Preseason Poll. TSU returns four offensive starters and two on defense.
• Injuries took a major toll for TSU last year as several key players return after season-ending injuries suffered during the Labor Day Classic in linebacker Jacob Williams and quarterback KJ Cooper. Two years ago, Williams was TSU's first
100-plus tackler since 2004 while Cooper led TSU to a Labor Day Classic win in 2024.
• Saturday's regional match-up should be intense as both teams feature student-athletes who were high school teammates.
• Cris Dishman is the 18th head coach in the history of Texas Southern Football. Dishman inherits a tough task as the program has only had 28 winning seasons in 78 years of existence and hasn't recorded a winning season since 2000.
