TSUSports.com: Dukes leads five Tigers named to Black College Nines Elite Teams

HOUSTON – Texas Southern University's baseball team claimed more postseason awards this week as the Tigers placed four players on the Black College Nines Elite Teams for the university division.

Senior outfielder Kamren Dukes was named the Large School Division's HBCU National Player of the Year, while TSU head coach Michael Robinson was named the Coach of the Year. BlackCollegeNines.com names elite teams in Large School and Small School divisions, with the HBCUs competing in NCAA Division I comprising the Large School Division.

Dukes was joined on the Large School Division's First Team by teammates Gaudencio Lucca and Aron Solis. TSU's Christian Sanchez was named to the Second Team.

Having already been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Player and Hitter of the Year, Dukes led the Tigers to the SWAC West Division title. He was one of four TSU players named to the SWAC All-Tournament team as Texas Southern won its second consecutive tournament championship.

Dukes (Pearland, Texas/Pearland) has hit .396 and stole 30 bases through the team's 53 games this season. Earlier this season, he compiled a 34-game hitting streak, which brought him regional recognition, as well as the attention of several major media outlets in the greater Houston area.

Second baseman Lucca has been just as steady of a presence at the plate, as the senior from Mountain View, Calif., has hit .385 with nine home runs and 48 RBIs. He hit .491 against SWAC opponents, and was also named to the SWAC All-Tournament team following TSU's 4-0 showing at the postseason event.

Earlier this season, Lucca was named the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award's Player of the Week.

Aron Solis, a transfer from Wharton County Junior College, led the Tigers with a 10-3 record on the mound, and compiled a 3.34 ERA. In league play, the League City, Texas, product was 7-1 with a 1.99 ERA.

Sanchez added to his home run total during the SWAC Tournament, and now leads the conference with 17 home runs.
