The Texas Southern University baseball team begins the 2020 season as they travel to New Mexico State in a four-game series for the second consecutive year. The teams will play single games on Friday and Sunday with a Saturday doubleheader. TSU is looking for their first win during opening weekend since Feb. 18, 2018, where they defeated Lamar University 4-3.
The Tigers return to the diamond after finishing 2019 with a 20-34 record. TSU finished in third place in the SWAC's Western Division with a respective 13-11 record. In the conference tournament, they were eliminated in the semifinals to the eventual champion Southern Jaguars 7-6 in the deciding game of the matchup.

Of the starting lineup from TSU's last game, five players return to suit up for the next season. Of them, three begin the year with preseason conference honors. Outfielder Tyson Thompson (Sr.) was named to the All-SWAC Preseason First Team whereas infielders Oscar Ponce (R-Jr.) and Nic Garza (Sr.) made the Second Team.

Thompson led the Tigers offense last year with a .365 average - 9th among outfielders in the conference - 27 hits, 1 triple, 13 RBIs, 12 walks and a .478 on-base percentage. Ponce chipped in with a .317 average, 26 hits, 23 RBIS, and 50 total bases, while Garza posted a .299 average, 23 hits, and 21 walks - the most in the team.
