Once again, the Texas Southern University Department of Athletics continued its strong tradition of academic success as five teams posted perfect single-year APR scores of 1,000 in the latest NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) report.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation, and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.

Leading the way with perfect single-year APR scores were men's basketball, men's cross county, women's cross country, women's golf and bowling.

Out of the 16 sports offered by Texas Southern, 11 posted multi-year APR scores that ranked top five amongst fellow Southwestern Athletic Conference members when broken down by individual sports. Women's golf topped the SWAC with a 990 multi-year score while men's basketball and bowling finished second amongst its peers. Baseball, men's golf, softball, soccer and volleyball ranked third while men's cross country and men's track finished fourth. The TSU football team rounded out the top five performers ranked fifth.

TSU's departmental APR score was 976 which is close to the national average of 986. In the latest Graduation Success Rate, which reflects graduation numbers among student-athletes who entered college from 2015 to 2018, the athletics department has a GSR of 81 percent while the men's basketball and bowling teams posted perfect scores (100). Last academic year, the department graduated 66 TSU student-athletes.

Each academic year, every Division I sports team's APR is calculated using a simple and consistent formula. Scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for staying on course for a degree in their chosen major and 1 point for being retained (or graduating) at the end of each academic term. A team's total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by 1,000. For schools that do not offer athletics scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.
