TSU boss set for first big test of his presidency - homecoming week

Austin Lane is preparing for his first time to welcome Texas Southern University’s alumni back to campus, as homecoming at the historically black institution kicks off on Sunday.

Rectangular TSU pennants line streets on the campus. Shrubs that grew on the wrought-iron fences have been trimmed and removed. And a planned parade for Oct. 22 has been rerouted from downtown Houston to within the Third Ward, symbolically tying the campus back to its neighborhood.

Lane, 45, took the helm of TSU as president this summer after working as executive vice chancellor of the Lone Star College system. Increasing spirit and alumni engagement through traditional events like homecoming is one of the priorities of his presidency.
