CONFERENCE NEWS AND NOTES:

• Texas Southern cliched the SWAC Western Division crown by virtue of last weekend’s sweep over Prairie View A&M, giving the Tigers their fifth straight division championship. Alabama State has a chance to clinch this weekend, as all the Hornets need is one win versus Mississippi Valley State or one Alcorn State loss to claim the eastern division.

• Texas Southern’s Lauren Rodriguez may arguably be the hottest pitcher going in the league, as she has earned five straight wins.

• The April 24-25 series between Jackson State and Alabama A&M looms large as JSU jumps to the East’s No. 4 seed by winning the series. However, that requires JSU to do something it has not done all season: win a home game. AAMU looks to stop a 10-game slide and has lost seven in a row to JSU, having beaten the Tigers only twice since 2012 (2-10).

• Southern’s Ambrelle Burton remains the only player in the league -- and one of four in the country -- that has yet to strike out this season.

• Ashley Breal of Alcorn State comfortably leads the conference in strikeouts, as her total of 144 places her in the top 50 nationally. In addition, her 8.7 strikeouts per seven innings would rank her among the top 35 players in the country when it comes to that category.
