The Texas Southern University soccer team finished fourth in the western division last season with a record of 4-13-0. The Lady Tigers ended 2013 at 2-2 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play.
Perhaps the biggest disappointment was being eliminated from the conference tournament in the opening round which was played in their backyard in Houston. TSU fell 4-0 to eventual champion Jackson State.
Junior Marlyn Campa led the team in shots per game (35), points (17), and points per game (1.06). Campa was also ranked in the top 10 in the conference among each of those statistical categories.
Ruth Giraldo was on the coattail of her teammate. The sophomore and Houston native ended the 2013 season ranked ninth in the league in points (16) and points per game (1.00).
Kathryn Saunders was named head coach at TSU this past spring. Saunders joins the program after spending the past three seasons at Alabama State University where she served in the capacity of assistant coach. She came to ASU after serving as the assistant coach at near-by Auburn University Montgomery. Saunders worked with all facets of the AUM program and the Colorado native assisted the Lady Senators into the Top 25 ranking during the 2010-11 season.
The Lady Tigers will officially open the season on Friday, August 22 on the road versus North Texas. Texas Southern will play its first home game of the season on Sunday, August 24 versus Texas A&M Corpus-Christi at Alexander Durley Field.
