College basketball countdown: No. 68 Texas Southern

THE FIRST WORD: More than a decade removed from coaching in a national championship game, Mike Davis is content with being the furthest thing from it now.

"I love it here, I love Houston," Davis said of his new home, entering his third season as the head coach of Texas Southern.

Interesting to note:
After losing Murray and, well, just about everybody from last year's roster (the Tigers bring back just three key players, two of them starters), how does Texas Southern regroup and reach the tourney again? By following a similar format.

Davis won't confide which players formerly of marquee programs will be transferring or signing onto his program this season — because he's not allowed to until they officially sign — but just like he did with Murray last year, he's poised to give several hungry-to-break out stars a chance to reinvent themselves after sour endings with their respective high-major schools.

Fun read .... I don't understand why the writer felt the need to overemphasize the SWAC being a weaker league.  Quite tactless, especially when you're featuring a team from the league.  He should've been more concerned with emphasizing that TSU is only featured once and not twice (they're at No. 61 too). Besides the conference can't be the absolute worst if they're not last in average attendance, clearly they're providing enough intense basketball play to keep people coming back every year.

But I caught on to Davis philosophy long ago. I'm not totally convinced it's the best way to go by building up a program but as long as their winning championships and being serious contenders in the SWAC I can't say much.

I wouldn't be surprised if Godfrey from SU and a transfer from a major DI comes to TSU.  And you already reported on a few others like that guy from Nebraska. Houston, an emerging state-of-art campus, and a former NCAA Finals coach is a good sale.  Houston is getting so much good press with the booming economy, entertainment scene, amazing diversity, and preparing for the 2016 Super Bowl that I seriously considered moving back recently

They do it in a weird way... we're the only NEW article from 2014. The rest are from 2013. #67 should be published today.

The SWAC needs to win more OOC games and consistently before they're taken seriously. I think a big part of that too is that for our non-conference games, almost all of our schools take money games and go get beaten by nearly everyone.

IF the end result is to get freshman who wouldn't have normally signed with us to play at TSU, then I think it's getting the job done. You can't rely on one and done transfers forever, but it can help establish a foundation if it can bring in those younger freshman. The promise of going to the big dance in your first year can be an eye opener.

Expect to see a high major kid signing...

Yes the SWAC needs to win OOC games at a higher percentage in all sports except baseball and maybe softball.  I have faith it will happen, but it starts with more intensive recruiting.  It seems to me that sports outside baseball and softball recruit at practically the same schools/same regions/same type of players  .... they need to expand their scope and be more creative to snatch a more diverse talent pool.  There's enough to go around, I've seen it.

And Mike is not really recruiting freshmen (if I'm understanding your point correctly).  He's almost exclusively interested in transient upper-classmen and they're getting the job done in my opinion.  Since Mike's been here we've been a top 2 SWAC team. I forgave him for that Florida university fiasco lol.  Putting TSU bball on the map and satisfying us demanding alumni with high expectations.  I approve.
