SAN ANTONIO – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University split a pair of close games at Incarnate Word on Wednesday, taking the first game by a score of 4-3 before falling in the second game 6-5.

Texas Southern returns to action this weekend when they head to Austin for games against Minnesota and Texas. The games against the Longhorns will be aired on Longhorn Network.

TSU 4, UIW 3
The Lady Tigers went ahead by two runs in the top of the sixth inning and then withstood a last-inning rally by the Cardinals to pick up their second win of the season.

Paige Jackson knocked an RBI double in the sixth to score Madi Marek from first base, then came home on a throwing error by UIW's catcher, who was attempting to throw out Marissa Padron stealing second base.

Chelsea Baxter pitched the final two and one-thirds innings for the Lady Tigers, striking out four batters and allowing just earned run en route to the victory in the circle. Starting pitcher Naomi Reyes struck out five batters over four and two-thirds innings.

The Lady Tigers opened the scoring in the top of the fifth inning when Zariah Robins knocked an infield single that moved Ebony Wiltz to third base and allowed Haley Castro to score. Wiltz crossed the plate later in the inning on a UIW error.

Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the seventh, UIW loaded the bases and then knocked an infield single, but a heads-up play by Wiltz to get the ball to third baseman Marek got a Cardinal baserunner as she went too far rounding third base. Instead of having the bases loaded with one out, TSU faced a much more manageable two outs with two runners on; Baxter then induced a pop-up to end the game.

UIW 6, TSU 5
The Lady Tigers rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings, then took a lead into the bottom of the eighth only to see UIW come back and win the second game.

The inning started with Marek and Jackson reaching base on errors, which was followed by Aubri Ford knocking a single that scored Marek and moved Jackson to third base. Ford then moved to second base on the throw.

Zariah Robins then came into pinch run for Ford, and she moved to third base on a wild pitch that allowed Jackson to score and cut the UIW lead to 3-2. A'Leecia Bell then knocked an infield single to allow Robins to score and tie the game.

In the eighth, Lauryn Banks knocked a one-out double, then came home two batters later on Jackson's double. Jackson then came home on Padron's RBI single.

In the bottom of the eighth, Incarnate Word scored a run two batters into the inning. They later loaded the bases for Hope Sobolew, who knocked a two-RBI hit to win the game.

Starting pitcher Destiny Ricks allowed only one run over four innings for the Lady Tigers. Mariah Youngblood gave up five runs over the remainder of the game.
