HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Jackson State University (#4 seed) capitalized on a 1-0 win against Texas Southern University during the second match of the quarterfinals at the 2014 Women's Soccer Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

The match started off very physical. A lot of aggression was displayed by both teams. A Yellow Card was given at the 27:52 minute mark. The match soon found it's flow.  In the 24th minute, Jackson State's Elexis Rice took a long shot that went slightly too high and above the net. Shortly afterwards, Rice found the back of the net and scored the first goal of the match, assisted by Junior defender Rayana Speight, giving the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Erica Cozart took the first and only shot for Texas Southern in the first half.  Jackson State finished the first half with seven shots, with five being on goal. Rice had four of those shots. Liliana Hernandez completed the first half with a total of four saves.

Going into the second half, Jackson State's All-SWAC first teamer, Jalana Ellis took the first shot on goal but was saved by Hernandez, tallying her fifth save for the afternoon. Texas Southern's Valeria Cortez took a free kick that was blocked after a foul was called on Rice.  The second yellow card of the game was given to #99 Haley Rodriguez in the 25th minute.

At the 23:40 minute mark, TSU's Maryln Campa, who made the All-SWAC second team, fired a shot from the corner but was stopped by Jackson State's defense.  Both teams battled it out in the last five minutes of the match. Texas Southern looked desperately to score a goal but unfortunately came up short.

Jackson State outshot Texas Southern 15-2 with a 7-1 shots on goal advantage. Cozart led the way for TSU with a total of three shots. Hernandez ended the match with six saves for Texas Southern and Kylie Christian tallied one for Jackson State.
