HOUSTON – A six-run third inning by Southern propelled the visiting Jaguars to an 8-6 win over Texas Southern in the regular season finale for both teams Sunday.

Robinson Mateo's three-run home run capped the big inning for the Jaguars (16-25, 10-14 SWAC), who clinched the final playoff berth from the Southwestern Athletic Conference's West Division.

The single game played by the Tigers and Jaguars was a rescheduled makeup game from March 5, when area rains forced the postponement of the third game of the TSU-Southern series at MacGregor Park. The game was played three days before the start of the SWAC Tournament as three of the four playoff berths depended on the outcome of the game.

With the loss, TSU (16-32, 14-10 SWAC) will go into the tournament as the No. 2 seed from the West. The Tigers will meet Alabama A&M in the opening game of the event at 9 a.m. at Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans.

The win pulled Southern into a tie with Arkansas–Pine Bluff for fourth place in the SWAC West Division. Southern won four out of the six games between the two teams and held the tiebreaker advantage.

TSU's Olajide Oloruntimilehin hit a two-run home run for the Tigers in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut Southern's lead to 8-5. Jose Camacho added a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth.

Michael Villanueva (7-4) took the loss for the Tigers, giving up six earned runs over two and two-thirds innings. Anthony Martinez pitched four and one-third innings of relief for TSU and allowed only a single unearned run.
