TSUSports.com: Texas Southern to compete for SWAC championship on Sunday

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Tigers of Texas Southern University will compete for the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament championship for the third consecutive year after defeating Jackson State 11-2 on Friday.

TSU pitcher Ryan Hawkins turned in the finest performance of his Tigers career Friday, allowing only one earned run and scattering four hits over and eight and one-third innings to send his team into Sunday's championship game.

The Tigers will face defending champion Alabama State at 11 a.m. Sunday at Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans. The game will also be televised on ESPNU.

Jose Camacho knocked in three runs while Ryan Jackson and Jose Cabreja tallied two RBIs apiece as TSU defeated Jackson State for the second time in as many days. Texas Southern broke the game wide open in the top of the fifth when Cabreja knocked a pinch-hit, two-run double that scored Gaudencio Lucca and Kamren Dukes. Cabreja then scored on Christian Sanchez' RBI double.

The upcoming matchup at against Alabama State will be rematch of last year's final. Texas Southern aims for its second SWAC championship in three years, having defeated Southern for the 2015 championship.
