LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University were unable to claim their first victory of the 2017-18 season Wednesday, falling 72-37 at Kansas.

After a competitive first quarter, the Jayhawks overwhelmed their visitors by outscoring the Lady Tigers 24-2 in the second quarter to take a 40-16 lead into halftime.

The Lady Tigers fell to 0-2 on the season while Kansas improved to 2-0.

Kaitlyn Palmer was the high scorer for the Lady Tigers for the second consecutive game, scoring 14 points on 5-of-15 shooting. The senior guard was 4-of-11 from 3-point range.

Artavia Ford came off the TSU bench to score nine points and block three Kansas shots, while Niya Mitchell (pictured) pulled in a team-high eight rebounds. Kylee Kopatich scored 19 points to lead three Jayhawks scoring in double-figures.

The Jayhawks led from start to finish but couldn't pull away from their guests until after the first quarter. Kansas led by as many as six points in the first quarter, but a fast-break layup from Ford and a 3-pointer by Palmer on consecutive trips down the floor pulled TSU to within one point of their Big 12 hosts at 9-8 with 4:31 remaining in the period.

Palmer also got off a buzzer-beater as time expired in the first quarter to trim KU's lead to 16-14 after the first 10 minutes.

TSU shot 26 percent (14 of 54) from the floor while Kansas shot 28-of-29 from the field, good for a 40.6-percent showing.

Though Kansas held a comfortable lead in the second half, the Lady Tigers continued to show competitiveness after halftime; the Jayhawks edged the Lady Tigers 13-12 in the third quarter.

The Lady Tigers make their home debut Tuesday, Nov. 21, when they host Texas State. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
