BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas Southern University soccer player Briana Norwood was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league announced Monday.

A junior from San Antonio, Texas, Norwood played all 180 possible minutes and anchored a TSU defense that recorded a shutout and went 1-1 this weekend. With Norwood in the backfield, the Lady Tigers permitted only eight shots on goal of the 21 shots TSU's opponents took this weekend, allowing only a 38.1 percent percentage.

Norwood also provided an offensive spark in the team's 4-0 win over Arkansas–Pine Bluff on Sunday. The team's strongest player on throw-ins, she heaved a perfect pass to teammate Kelly Sanders in the goal box for TSU's second goal of the match.

In the second half, Norwood scored a goal of her own when she redirected a corner kick in to the back of the net. It was her second goal of the season; Norwood's seven points (two goals and three assists) is tied for second on the team with Sanders.

Norwood's weekly defensive honor was her third such accolade this season. The Lady Tigers (5-5-2) are 4-1-1 in SWAC play, and their defense has allowed the fewest goals per match in the conference.

Texas Southern returns to the pitch Friday when the Lady Tigers host Alcorn State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at TSU's Durley Stadium.
