HOUSTON – LSU–Alexandria took advantage of a defensive miscue in the final minute Sunday and claimed a 1-0 victory over the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University.

Jessica Sanchez recovered the ball between the left touchline and the penalty area and sent a high, arcing shot into the top-right corner past an outstretched Alexis Robles to give the visiting Generals a 1-0 lead 31 seconds before the final whistle.

The loss dropped Texas Southern to 1-4-1 as they prepare to open Southwestern Athletic Conference play on Friday. The Lady Tigers have lost their previous three contests since returning to the pitch after Hurricane Harvey cancelled two matches.

The visiting NAIA side improved to 4-2-1 with the victory.

Sanchez' goal proved to be a sudden (and fluke) change of events after TSU controlled the pace of play and possession for the majority of the match. LSU–Alexandria gave the Lady Tigers only one real scare prior to that, when Jaslyn Gregory's open shot hit the left post in the 74th minute.

The Lady Tigers were missing two of their starting defenders – Bailey Blalock and Briana Norwood – but allowed the Generals only four shots on goal during the match. Though they controlled the pace of the match, the Lady Tigers also found real scoring chances to be few against the LSUA defense.

Paige Hayward nearly gave the home side the lead in the 19th minute when she recovered a turnover just outside the penalty area and had only goalie Cecilie Mortensen to beat. Hayward fired low, but not far enough away from Mortensen, who made the save.

TSU was denied again shortly past the hour when Brooke Ianiero sent a 40-yard free kick into visitors' goal box, but the header shot deflection from Karla Olivarez went just wide of the net.

The Lady Tigers visit Southern on Friday to open SWAC play; kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. TSU will play its first four league matches on the road before returning home for an Oct. 6 matchup against Grambling.
