HOUSTON – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University split their two matches on the first day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Volleyball Roundup on Friday.

At TSU's H&PE Arena, the Lady Tigers (3-6, 1-1 SWAC) opened the day with a sweep of Alcorn State before falling in a tough four-set match to Alabama A&M.

Texas Southern University is hosting one of the two SWAC regular season events, in which all five teams from the West Division will face the five teams from the East Division in a single weekend. Alabama State will host the event next month.

The Lady Tigers face Jackson State at 3 p.m. on Saturday, and then will follow that match with a 5:30 match against Mississippi Valley State.

Alexis Austin delivered 11 kills to propel Texas Southern to a sweep of Alcorn State during day one of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.

Texas Southern's Asia Howard picked up a double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs, and Kirby Anderson aided the TSU offense with nine kills, and Eboni Mitchell added seven. Valencia Grayson collected 11 digs, and Alyssa Chudian dished out 10 assists.

Alondra Rivera Modesto's seven kills were tops among Lady Braves, and Jasmine Chambers put up 11 digs and 10 assists. Pai Iosia had six digs and four kills.

Outhit .223-.037, Alcorn battled TSU to an 18-18 tie in set one before a 7-1 run sealed it for TSU. After winning set two comfortably, Texas Southern was forced to play catch in set three as Alcorn capitalized on numerous attack errors to build a 12-7 lead. However, TSU outscored Alcorn 18-8 the rest of the way.

Big games from Syretha Pride, Terra Brooks and Meredith Sieck propelled Alabama A&M (2-12, 2-0 SWAC) to a four-set victory over Texas Southern during day one of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.

Pride and Brooks each smacked down 17 kills, with Brooks adding 23 digs and Pride accounting for six combined blocks. Sieck dished out 50 assists, the best mark by a SWAC player in a single match this season. Mikel Coleman added nine kills.

Alexis Austin had a big game for Texas Southern despite the loss with 19 kills and 12 digs. Nicole Robinson added 10 kills, and Asia Howard had a double-double with 31 assists and 10 digs.

After Alabama A&M snapped up set one, the match became tightly contested as the next two frames required extra time. AAMU stole set two after overcoming a 22-14 deficit with a 16-6 run, but Texas Southern staved off another AAMU comeback attempt in set three to win it 30-28. However, it was all Lady Bulldogs in the fourth frame, who led by as many as 12.
