WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University gave a respectable showing at Wake Forest on Friday in a 73-56 defeat to open the 2017-18 basketball season.

The Demon Deacons used a 9-0 run to open the second period and stretch their lead to 26-12, which proved to be a comfortable margin as the Lady Tigers only once came within single digits of their Power 5 Conference hosts the rest of the way.

TSU's Kaitlyn Palmer scored 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting to lead the Lady Tigers, who began defense of their first ever Southwestern Athletic Conference title. Niya Mitchell chipped in 11 points and pulled in a game-high six rebounds in her TSU debut.

Tyra Whitehead led Wake Forest 23 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the field.
