Texas Southern University coach Mike Davis doesn't like his players to be comfortable.

Davis hasn't let his team play a non-conference game at home for the past two seasons, and he won't let it happen next season, either. The early-season adversity is part of a plan that paid off on Wednesday night as the Tigers downed Alabama A&M 77-69 at Toyota Center in a game that was uncomfortably close for the two-time reigning SWAC champs.

TSU trailed in its SWAC tournament opener by as many as nine points and led by just two at the half.

"My strategy is to get our guys in the most challenging situations possible so when we have games like this, they know how to handle it," Davis said.

Top-seeded TSU (17-12) will now play in the tournament's semifinals at 8:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of Thursday's matchup between fourth-seeded Southern and fifth-seeded Alabama State.
