Maurice Cook narrowly clinched the Republican nomination for Bastrop County sheriff after pulling in 16 more votes than his opponent, Matt Henderson.

Cook received 1,741 votes (50.23 percent), compared with Henderson’s 1,725 (49.77 percent) in Tuesday’s runoff election, according to the Bastrop County elections office.

Cook retired from the Texas Rangers in 1996. Years later he earned a law degree from Texas Southern University and went into teaching.
