JJ Watt reaches out to Alvin athlete

ALVIN — Jackie McDonald was sitting on the couch late one evening when her son, Christian, rushed into the room and told her the house was on fire. Jackie assumed it was a minor matter — a cigarette burning, maybe — until her husband Jay rolled his wheelchair into the room and told her to call 911.

“It was an electrical fire. It started in the wall,” Jackie said. “We had a grandkid in the bathtub. Everybody got out, everybody was fine.”

As they stood in the yard, watching everything they owned burn, Jackie heard screaming from the road. Her daughter, Jordan, had just returned from a friend’s house.

“We lost the whole house,” Jordan said.

The family is still working to rebuild what they lost in the fire, but J.J. Watt’s generosity provided some cheer in a dark time, as well as some inspiration for a determined athlete. Jordan has accepted a full scholarship to Texas Southern University, where she will play softball — and maybe, someday, help another young player out.
