Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame selection committee members say the Class of 2015 is one of the strongest in the hall’s 19 years, a claim that would be hard for anyone to dispute.
This year’s 10-member class, which will be formally inducted at a luncheon Saturday at the Dining Room at the Music Hall in Fair Park, includes athletes who have combined to win five Super Bowls, two NBA titles, seven NCAA track and field titles and a state Class 5A football championship.
The class also includes 73-year-old Pittsburg, Texas native and Texas Southern product Homer Jones, a New York Giants standout receiver and kickoff returner who is credited as being the first player to spike a football after a touchdown - in a sense, the action that led to today’s post-touchdown celebrations.
